Easy-to-craft whimsical holiday light shades you can make with ribbons and trims.

So sorry that this is two days late. We had some family stuff going on and it was just impossible to find the time to sit in front of the pc. We were lucky enough to have this same project featured in the January issue of Romantic Homes magazine...which is still on shelves now...page 16. We hope you can find the time to do it...if not now, be sure to save these instructions because these can work for any holiday really.

This easy-to-do project yields dazzling results. Gather all of your favorite ribbons and bits of trim, such as lace, pom-poms, sequins, rick rack, chenille and tinsel. Use a variety of textures, but tie them all together with a specific color theme - and don't just think holiday, as you can make a set for every season. Sure, Christmas is upon us, but these would make a fab project for the brief time between Christmas and New Years. It's so fast and easy and New Years is the perfect time to increase the amount of holiday lighting in your home...for the one last hurrah. Plus, you've got family visiting...kids home from college for the holidays. A simple project like this is a fantastic way to get your craft on and catch up with loved ones at the same time. So look for a spare strand of lights, (we found the perfect length strand for about three dollars at Michaels...maybe in the floral section...just the right length to hang across your mantle... and you'll need to put together no more than ten little shades! We placed ours on every-other bulb.) so... gather round the crafting table and light up the New Year!

What you'll need:
---------------------
-strand of Christmas lights
-large size treat cups, found in the baking aisle of your local craft store
-bits of ribbon and trim
-all-purpose glue
-scissors
-x-acto knife

Instructions:
----------------

1. Cut desired ribbon and trim to match the circumference of the treat cup. Apply trim to the cup, gluing about every two inches and pressing down to adhere at each point, securing well at the seam. Using the same seam line, follow the same process for the ribbon.

2. Once the shades are decorated, use and x-acto knife and cut a small X in the center of each cup bottom for the light bulbs to fit through. Then pop shades over bulbs, pushing through until the plastic base emerges through the X.

3. Be creative - for instance, layer rick rack on top of lace, combine pom-poms with satin ribbon, ets. Glue as you go for best results

Have Fun!!!! Happy Happy Holidays!! XOXO Jenny & Aaron

Christmas Confections

Is it a cookie? Is it a candy? These yummy chocolate confections can be whatever you want them to be! This is one of my mother's recipes from long ago. Variation - if you make a indentation with the back of a spoon after you drop them onto the wax paper, they will look like a nest. Then add a few small jelly beans for "eggs." These are cute at Easter time too.

Quick and Easy Decorations

Hi everyone! I hope this finds you almost ready for Christmas. But just in case you are not quite ready, here is a quick and easy decorating solution. This tutorial came from my need to decorate quickly this year without putting too much out. (long story) It's also great because you probably already have everything on hand!

First you will need:
1. Holiday themed scrapbook paper or wrapping paper would work too! I used 12x12 scrapbook paper.
2. Piece of cardboard, matboard, cereal box, etc. cut to the size you would like your finished piece.
3. Ribbon, strip of fabric, or string to tie your package decor.
4. Glue (glue stick or double sided tape adhesive)

Let's get started!

If you think the edges of the cardboard will show you can paint around the edges before you do the next step but this is optional and I did not paint mine. Now apply adhesive to your cardboard piece on each corner and along sides.

Now apply your scrapbook paper or wrapping paper to the cardboard. (If you are using wrapping paper you can cut a bit bigger than the cardboard and wrap around the edges or just wrap the entire piece of cardboard.) Then wrap your ribbon around like a package and tie in bow.

Hang on wall or prop up on an easel. I have mine hanging on an old door in my entry. Quick and easy and adds holiday cheer in a snap!

You could also:
1. do several and hang in a big space like over a sofa or down a hallway
2. display holiday photos and cards by pinning them to the paper covered cardboard

I hope you enjoyed this quick and easy holiday decorating idea!

Please don't forget to sign up for the wonderful giveaway posted here. It's a great give away!!! And I think we have one more tutorial next week. So please come back and visit.

Happy Holidays everyone and thanks so much for taking time to visit us at Joli Paquet. We hope we have inspired your Holiday crafting!

Felted Cone Christmas Trees

Hi everyone - and Happy Holidays! We had a big snow storm here in Connecticut a few days ago and it is definitely beginning to look a lot like Christmas - or the tundra!

My project - a fairly simple and fun one - is Felted Cone Christmas Trees. I happened across these cardboard cones on Ebay a while ago. I think they are industrial spools for thread or wool. Inverted, I thought they's make a great base for Tussie Mussies, but upright they look like - what else? - Christmas Trees!

What you'll need is 12"x18" sheets of wool felt (I got mine from Vintage Vogue. I believe the two I'm showing here are Cucumber Crush and Babbling Brook), rick rack or thin ribbon such as velvet or grosgrain, sequins, small beads, some sort of "tree topper", white glue and scissors.

Start by measuring out the cone shape onto the felt by positioning it at an angle against one edge and rolling it toward the other edge, tracing the bottom with a charcoal pencil or chalk as you go. Better to make it a little too big than too small! You can always trim later!

Cover the cone with white glue then starting at one edge roll the felt onto it. Secure with clothes pins or rubber bands and let it dry. After it has dried, carefully trim the edges of the seam and trim flush along the bottom.

Now the fun starts! Measure out a length of rick rack or ribbon that will twist around your tree from top to bottom, like garland. Glue or sew sequins topped with beads at even intervals along this garland, then with a thin line of glue, attach it to your tree. Create other bead and sequin "ornaments" and add those to the tree. Let dry.

Attach your tree topper with glue. Allow to dry - and voila! You have a very stylish, modern take on a Christmas Tree decoration. Several of these would look great along a mantel top or shelf.

By the way, if you want a more traditional looking tree ornament, you could first glue a dowel or stick inside the cone with a hot glue gun, and create a base with an old wooden spool. For a different look, patterned fabric could be used rather than felt. I will have a few of these cones available in my Etsy shop, or search Ebay for Cardboard Cones.

Enjoy!!

Finally! Tis the Season...

Hello everyone! I am so sorry to be bringing you this tutorial so late. The cooling fan went out in my laptop and I had to get a repair out here, plus it is so incredibly windy here today that the power keeps going in and out. Hopefully I will get this posted before that happens again.
Are you ready to make this little vintage holiday wall hanging? (or it can actually be used as an ornament, it just depends on what size mat you use)

Let's gather our supplies!
For this project I used an antique photo album page as my base. I know many of us have these in our stash, but if you do not, you can usually find some on etsy or ebay.
I also used paper flowers and leaves from Prima, Stickles glitter glue in Platinum and Crystal, Tattered Angels spray in Iridescent Gold, The Ultimate Glue, a rubber stamp from the craft store, and chalk ink also from the craft store, glass glitter, and some holly leaves also picked up at my local craft store.
As the project is shown, I also used vintage bead chain and silk ribbon. If you do not have any vintage bead chain in your stash, this project can easily be made with any ribbon you have on hand. If you are using bead chain you will also need 2 jump rings.
You will need the following tools: craft knife, scissors, glass mat or cutting surface, ruler, pliers for attaching the jump rings and bead chain, a hole punch, and paper towels.
The antique album mats that I had in my stash hold two photos and I only needed the frame for one, so I simply cut it in half with my craft knife and trimmed the edges to make the sides even. You can use any size mat that you have!
Next you will want to right click on the image and save it to your computer. Then print it in the size you need to fill your album "window". My mat is rather small, so I printed at a standard wallet size photo. You do want to make sure and print on cardstock or other heavier weight paper as we will be spraying the image and standard printer paper is too thin.
Now, if you have never used the Glimmer Mists before, you are about to fall in love. If you have, then you already know, and have probably sprayed every surface of your studio by now, right? Seriously, I LOVE this stuff. In fact I fell so head over heels in love I just placed an order for my shop...but we're getting off track here. The Glimmer Mist will add a lovely iridescent glittery mist to whatever surface you spray it on. Here is a photo I took in the bright sunshine so you could see just how wonderful this is!
Can you see that wonderful gold sheen on everything? It's still hard to see in the photos, but trust me, it's stunning in person. I sprayed my image, my mat, and a flower and leaves with this. I like to blot a little as I go just to keep the glitter from pooling and I just do that with a paper towel. Make sure to put a paper towel under you as well unless you really do want glitter on your studio surfaces. :) Set those aside to dry.
Once my items were dry, (which doesn't take long at all) I added a fine line of glue to the edges of my leaves and flower and added some glass glitter. I also covered my holly leaves with glue and glass glitter as well.
While everything was drying, I stamped "Tis the Season" directly onto my mat. Now, you can use any sentiment you may have on hand. If you don't have a rubber stamp you want to use, print something on cardstock, glitter it with the Glimmer Mist, and let it dry. I used an olive colored chalk ink for my project, but you can use any ink you have on hand.
I then traced over the stamped words with my Platinum Stickles. When this color dries it has the appearance of tarnished silver. LOVE this stuff too. I know Michael's carries a limited stock of Stickles, but you can also find it online or in a scrapbook store.
Once everything is dry, you will want to cut out your image and glue it to the back of the mat, so make sure you leave enough of and edge around the image to do that. I further embellished my image with a touch of the Crystal Stickles everywhere there is "snow" in the image. This just give a little extra dimension to the image and makes it all the more sparkly.
In this photo you can see where I just used a little of the Crystal Stickles, and you also see the pretty shimmer of the Glimmer Mist again as well. If you're using this as an ornament, you may want to cover the whole back of the page with vintage sheet music. This will also come in handy if the other side of your album page is in not so great shape like many of these antique pages.
Once everything is dry, I used my Ultimate Glue to attach my flower and leaves. I simply layered the paper leaves and added the holly leaves, then I glued my flower on top of that.
To finish up you will want to punch holes in the top of your mat. I used a standard hole punch and while it worked just fine, I think it left too large of a hole, so if you have another type of punching system, you might want to use a smaller hole. This is actually why I also decided to use both the ribbon and the bead chain. Originally I planned to just use the bead chain, but then I wanted to fill up that hole a little and I actually liked how it turned out with both the chain and the ribbon.
If you're using chain, you will want to attach the jump rings and then attach the bead chain to the jump rings. If you're using ribbon, just slide it through, tie a small knot, and do the same on the other side. I then trimmed any excess ribbon from my knots.
That's it! I hope you will have fun creating this project and if you have any questions at all, please feel free to email me.
Here's one last shot of it hanging on our Christmas tree.
Also, if you don't want to search around for all of the supplies for this project, I was able to put together a small handful of kits for it and they're available in my shop.
